User ReviewsRated by: Tony Rating: 05-04-2008 01:21 PMReview Text We are from Chicago visiting friends and must say we appreciated excellent service and outstanding food presentation. We were surprised at the quality of the food and wine in "small town" restaurant. Simply excellent!! We enjoyed the Mediterranean pasta, prime rib, chicken club and Lisa's salad. WOW! What a charming friendly restaurant!!! THANK YOU Backroad Grill! Rated by: CraigAnd Rating: 04-17-2008 06:04 PMReview Text I am an unabashed fan of this restaurant for which I make no apologies. New additions to the menu and an expanded wine list, featuring southern Oregon wines, differentiates this outstanding family operated restaurant. Take the short drive to Merlin and you won't be disappointed - Promise! Rated by: fxsts Rating: 08-11-2007 10:44 AMReview Text My wife and I went there because I had won a gift certificate from a charity golf event.
What a pleasant surprise. It was a 1/2 hour drive, the service was slow to start but then got into high gear and the beer was really cold.
We both had prime rib - rare, which was perfect. And the soup, veggies etc were great accompaniments.
Yup, we will return. Rated by: Top Chef Rating: 07-31-2007 10:59 AMReview Text Sometimes the service is very slow. Rated by: mustgofish Rating: 07-21-2007 08:38 PMReview Text For me it was food A+, but service C. The chicken pot pie was to die for -- especially the mile-long piece of flaky pastry that topped this marvelous melange. Alas, our server was really hammered by a large party, and I know how tough that can be. I just wish someone else would have picked up the slack. Will I go again? Try and stop me! Rated by: annakaye Rating: 07-17-2007 01:02 PMReview Text This was our first visit to Backroad Grill and enjoyed every aspect of the evening there. The five of us were seated in the back room which we liked very much. Our wait person was Helen who was very attentive and a happy friendly person. Did not see any appitizers listed on the menu but Helen suggested a few coconut prawns. Oh my, they were soooo good and the sauce that comes in a bowl was good enough to ask what was in it--sorry, chefs secret. Their racks of ribs (Friday only) and the soy Halibut were excellent. Don't go away without trying the Fuge Cake. (As they say, "to die for".)

I decided that it would be just the place for our monthly Secret Pal luncheon club to visit using the little back room and I believe we had 10 to 12 ladies. Made reservations and we had a wait person named Lisa that absolutely bent over backwards to see that we received everything we wanted and then some. We had separate checks with smiles and good humor. Sometime 10-12 of the somewhat "older" ladies can be a test of patience, I imagine!! Anyway, we had a great time and I would reccommend this resturant to everybody withous a hesitation. We were impressed with the extensive menu selections and the presentation matched many of the upscale restaurants we have been to in all of our travels. The meals were excellent and the wine selection was impressive. Best of all was that the staff treated us like family. Overall a fantastic dining experience.
Rated by: cdb Rating: 04-11-2007 07:57 AMReview Text The service wasn't good, our waitperson didn't check on us not once for water and such. We had to get up to find her and have our daughters meal returned. It was not to her liking. We had to wait another 20 minutes for a grilled cheese sandwich. My spouse ordered a mushroom hamburger it was over cooked and burnt around the edges. This isn't the first time we had poor service and crap for food there. going back isn't very likely. Rated by: CraigAnd Rating: 11-26-2006 07:44 PMReview Text Well, one of the MOST "rated" restaurants on this site, continues to surpass expectations. We had unexpected last minute guests on the Thanksgiving weekend - not a problem - graciously welcomed at BRG and the food was exceptional. For the "naysayers" in the rating scheme...Give me a specific restaurant in GP that beats this wonderful establishment. Service was excellent! Dishes prepared as requested! Rated by: Phoenix Rating: 11-05-2006 03:51 PMReview Text Had a terrific dinner at Backroad Grill on Saturday night, 11/4/06. Hubby had the special, prime rib, which was served exactly as he ordered. He chose the clam chowder and really liked it. I had the halibut with a soy/brown sugar glaze. YUM! Can't wait to try the bronzed halibut next time. The vegetables served with the entrees were perfect. I chose the cajun chicken gumbo for soup to start, very tasty and really liked the hot/spicy flavor from the chorizo. The presentation of the entrees was upscale and a nice surprise for a "little place in Merlin". Service was EXCELLENT. Can't wait to go back. Rated by: dgood Rating: 10-14-2006 12:01 PMReview Text Bland, boring food. Terrible atmosphere. It feels like a tourist trap. Stupidly expensive. Very limited menu. The halibut was over cooked and flavorless. They had an endless and stupid-pet-tricks TV show on two wall-mounted televisions the entire time I was in there. It was a totally miserable experience. AVOID! Rated by: diogenes Rating: 09-24-2006 02:59 PMReview Text I'm not as impressed with this place as everyone else seems to be. The food is good, but not outstanding. No complaints, except that it's a little overpriced for what you get. (I had the chicken pot pie.) Rated by: Perfectstitch Rating: 09-23-2006 01:59 PMReview Text This resaurant serves delicious food, has great service, a nice friendly atmosphere, is very clean and is a delighful place to dine out!!! Rated by: CraigAnd Rating: 08-03-2006 08:01 PMReview Text My family from Chicago visited this past week and were totally impressed - "We can't believe it, so good, so clean, so charming", said my world traveling son. Rated by: Never4get911 Rating: 07-26-2006 05:59 PMReview Text We were very pleased with the food, service and prices!!! We have a new favorite place to eat! Rated by: CityKid Rating: 03-18-2006 08:53 AMReview Text I enjoyed a most delicious, "allergy free" meal at this cozy, welcoming restaurant. For those of us with multiple food allergies, it is a delight to be able to go out without fear of hives, stomach ache, or worse,a trip to the E.R. It was service with a smile as they tailored the meal to my individual needs. My halibut and veggies were cooked to perfection and the peach/marrionberry cobbler was worth every delectable calorie. Overall, the excellent service, high quality food, and inviting atmosphere are deserving of an A+ rating. Rated by: CraigAnd Rating: 03-16-2006 10:36 PMReview Text The Backroad Grill has reopened after their usual winter hiatus with new additions to the menu. Ahi Tuna was the evening's special and the presentation was unbelievable to say nothing of the cilantro-tomato-onion sauce covering a perfectly prepared tuna entree. The Haddock is excellent with a choice of preparation, bronzed or soy-ginger sauce. A new dessert simply called "chocolate cake" is irresistible, scrumptious and down right outstanding - "Yummy" understates this exquisite "must have" desert. The service is equally outstanding. This restaurant is a well kept secret among the locals but has earned a deserved rating of A+ suggesting that it is worth the drive from "wherever" - you won't be disappointed! Rated by: Former User Rating: 12-22-2005 09:01 AMReview Text What a pleasant experience. ABSOLUTLY The best!!!!! Chicken Fried Steak West of the Atlantic Ocean. My son had their hamburger, my wife the Coconut Prawns. We were all delighted. Just a couple miles off I-5 on my way to Eugene. We can't wait go back on our way home. We were driving so we could not take advantge of there wine. Rated by: CraigAnd Rating: 12-18-2005 02:47 PMReview Text This little, charming, restaurant always serves good food and provides daily specials. Presentation of entrees is noteworthy. Exceptionally clean with friendly service. Wine & Beer available. The "Friday night rib special" is my favorite but come early because they almost always sell out. Rated by: SSEAKIN Rating: 07-25-2005 10:39 PMReview Text Great steaks.
