Steak and Eggs and Crab Cake Benedict, mmm mmm good. Prepared to perfection. Our server, Dawn was excellent. Plus atmosphere that reinforces Grants Pass as the best little river town in America. The prices are too high for mediocre food. Sure, the food is OK ~ but it does not justify the price. Rated by: ebizer Rating: 06/03/2010 08:42 PMReview Text We've enjoyed every meal we've had here - lunch and dinner. Haven't tried breakfast yet. Service is sometimes a little slow. Bartenders are friendly. ;) Rated by: rambling_rose Rating: 05/21/2010 08:10 PMReview Text Tap Rock is perfectly located along the river for a fantastic view. Inside and out this building gorgeous.
I have tried this restaurant four times. Every single time it was a disappointment. Burgers are heavy and rubbery, with no flavor, frozen patties I think, I even asked, but no straight answer. The French Dip & Aujus were the most bland cardboard flavor ever; I had to put soy sauce in my Aujus to get a little taste. My server was confused didnt check on us one time, I waited 20 minutes to get the attention of a server, by then my food was cold and my husband had already walked to the car.
I did complain the server apologized and explained the manager was suppose to be working my table since she was sent to work on a large party up stairs. She stated she would adjust the bill, but another server brought it to me then rushed off to a child who spilled her drink, my bill was never adjusted. I will not consume food from this place, it was huge disappointment. Rated by: dmaynard Rating: 05/16/2010 08:17 PMReview Text I have eaten at Taprock twice, and my wife 3 times. Each time has been a disappointment. MY first experience with them was Parmesan encrusted fillets of fish. The portions were small, the mashed potatoes tasted like they came out of a box of cheap instant mash, and the steamed veggies were overcooked and rubbery. The service was slow, and the staff were confused. Prior to ordering our group indicated separate tickets, we got separate tickets but all the items on each ticket were confused with someone's else order. This has happened twice.
My wife's burgers (both times) were not received as ordered, and the burgers themselves, for the price were mediocre. I've had much better fare at Laughing Clam, Circle J, or numerous other burger houses.
Given the beautiful structure and it's location, I'm saddened the food and service are not higher quality. For some reason this place was voted in the Sneak Preview of last year as best new restaurant, and other such awards. I feel it is hardly deserving of such awards/praise unless it seriously gets its act together. Rated by: Kismet Rating: 04/20/2010 05:38 AMReview Text You all know by now how much I love Taprock...so it must come as a surprise that I am giving them a "C." I can only hope this was an off night and things will be back to normal the next time I return.
I met my friends on the deck during the recent lovely weather for drinks and appetizers. The drinks were great - I love the new Raspberry Cooler that comes in River's Edge's old bamboo-shaped tall glasses. My friends drinks were not consistent - both drank Cuba Libres; the first time it was served nicely in a highball glass, the second in an old fashioned with no presentation. At $6.75 per drink, one would expect some consistency.
We initially ordered onion rings and crispy artisan cheese. We had to send the cheese back when it came to the table as it was not cooked in the middle. The food runner was RUDE by the way. She slung the food on the table with hardly a smile. She was even ruder when bringing back our re-heated cheese, which was still not melted completely through. When I joined them, we added a small caesar salad and crispy zucchini logs to our order. The salad appeared close to immediately, but we had to remind our server about the zucchini after 20 minutes. When it appeared on the table (again the surly food runner slammed it on the table), it was nearly raw inside. At that point, we all had time commitments and had to leave, so mostly raw zucchini it was. Not that it would have been unpleasant mostly raw, except the zucchini is cut in HUGE spears, so it was quite hard to eat.
Our server was pleasant, but with the surly food runner's attitude and the less-than desirable food, we left unhappy with the experience. Rated by: bornandraised Rating: 04/06/2010 07:19 PMReview Text The outside is gorgeous - most beautiful place in town! The inside is mostly great too - except for the main dining area..it is too open and has an old person feel. I like the bar, and it is fabulous if you get a private room. The food is alright - I love their burgers. There are a few things on the menu that aren't up to par though. Often times the food isn't hot as well. Rated by: Phoenix Rating: 12/21/2009 12:37 AMReview Text I have eaten at Taprock multiple times. The first three times were pretty good.
The last two times I've eaten there have been, unfortunately, not what I expect from a restaurant of this caliber (price and environs). The first of these, I took a friend, who had not yet tried Taprock, there for lunch. We both had the soup and salad. Our turkey noodle soup was cold and the noodles were mushy. We asked for our salads to be dressed very lightly, since we were told it came dressed and couldn't be on the side. When the salads were delivered, my friend's salad was not dressed and had dressing on the side. My salad was DRENCHED with dressing AND had a side of dressing also. My friend said if she had not heard good things about Taprock from me prior to this lunch, it would be her last time.
Last time my husband and I went for breakfast. Service was pretty good, although a bit confusing. My eggs were cold; the bacon was cold, dry and overdone; and my potato pancakes were underdone and gooey. My husbands hashbrowns were undercooked and everything was only lukewarm at best. I would actually give this visit a C-. It came with mashed pot there was ery little mashed pot the food for all of us was fair nothing more and you are paying top dollar, One of us asked if the crab cakes wee fresh and was told that the crab was fresh frozen, you would think that with the prices they charge they could use fresh fish, service was good nothing more but good. Rated by: Gypsy Rating: 11/24/2009 05:34 AMReview Text We wanted to attend the uncovering of the fiber optics Christmas mural and the ignition of all the lights at Evergreen Park, so we decided to go early and have dinner at Taprock.
It was getting busy when we arrived, and I'm glad we didn't wait til after the lighting ceremonies to eat. I understand it was a 40 minute wait. Not hard to believe as there were hundreds of people attending the lighting event. By the time we left, the room we were in was getting quite full.
We seldom order cocktails before a meal, but decided to have a "heated" Gran Marnier and a Tangueray and Tonic. They were both perfect. His heater was just right and how can you go wrong with Tangueray? :)
We also both ordered the crab/shrimp pasta. I hadn't tried a pasta previously and it just sounded good on this cold evening. I added the clam chowder as I've had it there before and like it. This time I liked it better. It was so thick and creamy I could have almost used a fork vice a spoon. The flat bread was just right; not too soft or too hard.
On to the pasta....... We both agreed that was one of the best pastas we've had in years. The sauce was just the right texture, rich and creamy, with a divine flavor. I think there was more shrimp than pasta. I couldn't finish all of mine. It was a lot of food, although if I hadn't eaten half of the chowder, I might have been able to consume all of it.
We were impressed and to top it all off, we had a coupon for $7. off the total. We both want that pasta again! Service was very friendly. Seemed maybe just a step behind, not real busy. Appetizer Onion Rings, Fried Zucchini, Pan fried oysters and mozzarella. The Onion rings and Mozzarella were cooked properly, the Zucchini was cold and breading not quite done. Oysters though tenders seemed a little "fishy" rather that briny. Almost offputting. Fish tacos were good, halibut crunchy, but filling lacked "pop" and flavor. Fries were just ok. Wifes sandwich was good, and something different with apples, and here apple fries were good. Nothing to jump up and down about, but a decent alternative to Elmer's and Crapplebees. Rated by: grumpe Rating: 10/04/2009 05:33 AMReview Text had lunch with a friend at tap-rock on wednesday. I really wa not impressed first there was so much noise that my friend had to turn off her hearing-aid
I ordered the caesar salad with and I quote topped with "smoke-grilled" chiken breast, the chicken was neither smoke or grilled, it tasted like boiled chicken brest. The romaine was about half leaf and half ribs of the leaf the dressing was ok nothing to write home about. I wouldn't order this again at the tap rock and to tell you the truth I had as good a salad at the wild river brewing for less money tap-rock was$9.99 my friend had the sasquatch sampler platter, it ws all deep fried I asked her if it was worth $11.99 she thought it was alittle over priced. As we left we decided that there was really no reason to return to the Tap-Rock niether for lunch lor dinner. Rated by: Kismet Rating: 08/23/2009 06:34 PMReview Text I have to say WOW! What a gorgeous building. I love both the exterior and interior decor....the decidedly park-like atmosphere blends beautifully with the scenery of the river and Riverside park.
My friends and I were seated on the deck where we could enjoy the turn in the weather. Our server was super-friendly and very knowledgeable in the local wines (one friend is a wine enthusiast).
Unfortunately I had to skip eating, but I can say they make a mean Manhattan. No cheap vermouth here! I had two to make up for my lack of eating :). That and they were so great!
My friends ordered the Mac n Cheese, Pan-Fried oysters, and Oregon Field Greens Salad. With their meals, they ordered white wine to compliment after much discussion with our server. Fresh garlic bread was brought with the wine, and this is my only area of complaint. I was disappointed that they were drenched in garlic salt and coated in dried herbs! Garlic salt overwhelms my sensitive palette and "burns" my tastebuds. In such an establishment, I would expect fresh herbs and garlic. My friends ate it anyway, so it had to taste good.
Their meals came quickly thereafter. The presentation was beautiful, and it smelled fantastic. The Mac n Cheese was a penne pasta with a light cheese sauce and ham, and received rave reviews. The oysters were HUGE! They smelled amazing and also received raves. The field greens salad was beautiful; very fresh and liberally sprinkled with candied hazelnuts and bleu cheese crumbles. My friends ate heartily and had nothing but good to say about the meal.
Our server was very gracious in splitting up our bills, even though it meant more work on her part. I tipped her generously for my two drinks and I know my friends did the same.
Aside from the bread issue, I am quite pleased in my experience at Taprock. I will say that the prices are a bit steep, but it is a tourist destination and being quite upscale, the prices are somewhat justified. The experience is definitely worth a few extra dollars.
If you visit, you simply must experience the deck. It is so peaceful to watch the river float by while your meal compliments the beauty. Rated by: debutterfly Rating: 08/17/2009 06:29 AMReview Text The only reason that this was given an A- instead of higher is due to the service that my party and I received, and truthfully this was not the fault of the waitstaff.
When we got there we were seated immediately, the two girls at the front desk were friendly and attentive as soon as we walked in the door. Almost every table in the room was occupied and it was immediately evident that the waitstaff was stretched thin. It took at least 10 minutes before anyone came to inquire what we would like to drink and we were informed that our waitress would be a few more minutes as they were extremely busy. Our waitress came before our drinks and did apologize profusely for the wait, our drinks (nothing special, just a soda, water and coffees) arrived while she was taking our order. She was friendly, knowledgable and attentive as well.
Two of us ordered the clam chowder and the third got the field greens salad to start us off. The chowder was delicious and the perfect temperature (this is big to me as I have burned my tongue on many a restaurant soup). The person in our party who had the fields green salad raved about it.
For entrees we had the parmesan crusted halibut, garlic and herb (I believe) rotissere chicken, and the skillet meatloaf. The parmesan crusted halibut (so we were told) was delicious and perfectly cooked, as were the mashed yukon potatoes and vegetables (the other members of the party were not allowed to sample this dish, as the person who ordered it would not share, guess that goes to show how good it was). The skillet meatloaf was delicious as well, moist but not greasy. The rice pilaf was a standard rice pilaf, but still tasty. The chicken was also very moist and tasty, though the piece with the drumstick was in most part a little too undercooked. The other (much larger) piece was cooked perfectly. We did notify our waitress of this so that the kitchen would know for safety reasons. Two of us (the meatloaf and the chicken) had leftovers to take home.
For dessert one of us got the Burnt Cream and another got the Peanut Butter Haystack. The third member of our party simply took bites from each. The burnt cream was evidently delicious. The peanut butter haystack was as well, but very rich. Over half of it was taken home for leftovers as well.
All in all it was a great experience. The decor is great and gives it that lodge feel. The large windows that look out onto the river let in a ton of light and a great view. All of the staff that we encountered were friendly and attentive. We will definitely be going there again! Rated by: chiefivfd Rating: 08/12/2009 05:03 AMReview Text I have experienced eating and dining at Taprock and highly recommend them. Rated by: Lee Holloway Rating: 07/11/2009 02:32 AMReview Text This was probably one of the best dinners I have had. Service was excellent, food was so delicious, and you can't be the atmosphere on the river! Rated by: Gypsy Rating: 07/09/2009 09:11 PMReview Text Last evening I had the opportunity to taste 7, yes 7 different meals at the Taprock NW Grill. My husband, oldest daughter, grand daughter, grandson, and three great grand babies all enjoyed a beautiful Grants Pass evening sitting along side the Rogue River at this lovely restaurant.
I will be honest and say I have been in the building previously for meetings, although I haven’t experienced the food. I know..... I’m a bad gramma. My oldest grand daughter is employed there. I will also state I am a food snob when it comes to supposed “upscale” restaurants, and my review of the food will not be biased upon the fact she works there. When I pay a good price for a good dining experience, I will rate it accordingly.
When we arrived, the hostess was NOT aware we were the grandparents of a co-worker. She was very warm and cordial and checked on the best seating for the eight of us, making sure we were in agreement. We didn’t see any grouping of workers gossiping, or lolly gagging around in the 20 minutes we waited for the rest of our party.
We had arrived early enough to be seated outside, under the wooden patio cover which over looks the river and the Hellgate boats with a view of the park like area and waterfalls. Very pleasant setting, with a gentle breeze on this warm evening.
Our server was Amy and she was very polite, listened carefully and the service was quite good. I know someone addressed that a server should take the order from the eldest woman at the table. We had three young children, so just start at one end of the table and work your way around. I find that very typical in most restaurants in this day and age. Especially with a group of 6 or more.
The non-alcoholic drinks came quickly and were refreshed well. The bar drinks took a little longer to refresh, although that was expected as we were outside and one level below the bar.
We were brought a unique style of bread sticks in a cone shaped metal coil which was a nice touch. It was a flatbread, baked with olive oil and a hint of seasoning. Not hard, not doughy, just right. Of course, the kids loved those.
While reading the menu, I noticed the information regarding the products that are utilized in the preparation of food at Taprock. Needless to say, I was more than impressed with all the Pacific NW fresh foods that are employed. I can’t begin to list all the information. I noticed one of their items, the clam chowder, was prepared for Taprock by Ivars of Seattle. That caught my attention right away. Ivars has the best clam and seafood chowders in Seattle. I didn’t order any because others at the table would have some and I wanted a seafood meal that I knew would be very filling. The appetizers are prepared fresh each day. The specialty cheeses are even cut fresh daily, breaded and cooked when ordered.
The dinners arrived and I will list my thoughts by what I tasted of each meal:
The first thing I experienced was the clam chowder. I immediately wished I had ordered that as well. It is the best clam chowder I’ve had in many years. In my estimation, it can’t be compared to any of the chowders I’ve tasted in the entire Rogue Valley. Absolute creamy perfection. I will definitely have a bowl on my next visit.
Dungeness crab and shrimp pasta: I am really a snob when it comes to pasta. This dish was full of fresh crab, tasty shrimp that were perfectly cooked, the pasta was al dente, the sauce had wonderful flavor, (very rich and full flavored), there was fresh onion and red peppers added and it was just delightful.
NW Sunset Platter: This is a seafood platter which contained fried shrimp, small Pac NW oysters, halibut, and crab cakes. The breading was light and tasty, the fish was perfect, the oysters tasty and cooked to perfection (I don’t like them large or runny), and the crab cakes were quite good, although a little bland for my taste.
Halibut Fish Tacos: There were three on his plate with coleslaw and a peach mango salsa on the side. Very white and flaky meat, each had a good sized piece of halibut, the mango salsa was very good and the tacos were presented very nicely. I am not a big fan of cole slaw, and I don’t really care for vinegar in my slaw. I didn’t care for it, although he liked it as did one other at the table. .
Crab Salad: It was huge with lots of crab, crisp greens and fresh vegetables. I tasted it do get a sense of the dressing and it was delicious. She commented she enjoyed it immensely.
Buffalo Burger: (I’m not sure that’s the correct name). It was HUGE! Wonderful Rogue Creamery cheese, very lean and tasty meat, great bun, and the Big Guy definitely wants to enjoy that when we go for lunch some time. Her french fries (and one of the children) were large, real potato (not frozen), cooked just right and tasty also.
The child’s pasta dish: It was a penne pasta in a very good marinara sauce and he’s normally a picky eater. He ate almost the entire meal. Very good flavor.
The child’s chicken & fries: Already addressed the fries. The chicken was two large pieces of white meat, breaded very nicely and seasoned just right. She loved it.
All in all, this was an excellent experience from the ambiance, to staff, to the food presentation and quality. When you take three children 5 and under to a restaurant, and they enjoy both the experience and food as much as these children did, that’s another real plus. They received a coloring book and crayons when we sat down, staff was very patient with them and made sure they were catered to as well.
We had the good fortune to visit with one of the managers, whom we hadn’t seen in a long time, and he stated this is by far the best dining employment he has every experienced. He has very positive words for the employer, the benefits and the staff. This is a person with many years of restaurant experience under his belt.
It became very crowded by 6:30. Folks were waiting to be seated, the parking lot was full with overflow well into the Evergreen Bank lot, and this was on a Wednesday evening which surprised me. I understand their revenue has remained consistent since they opened.
We will return. Congratulations to Brady Adams, Dave Thomason and the staff. A nice addition to GP.
I find it interesting that one individual who posted a review had never posted on ILGP previously, only posted one time, in a less than average review, and hasn’t posted again. Perhaps I’m a little suspicious, although a couple of folks have questioned the maneuver as well. Giving the benefit of the doubt, perhaps that individual should return for another meal. I’m hearing 98% good reviews on this establishment. For a new start-up, that’s pretty impressive. Rated by: fxsts Rating: 07/02/2009 08:02 PMReview Text After a half dozen informal visits, we had our first full course dinner at Taprock on Saturday night. We were a party of 11. Us 2 locals, plus some from Medford, So Cal, Philadelphia, and Tennessee.
First of all, the service was excellent, no small task. There was no unexpected delays, no SNAFUS. Drinks and appetizers came out quickly and were enjoyed by all.
Everyone was pleased with their dinners: steaks, oysters, fish, pasta, salads etc.
I had the prime rib, ordered rare and it was cooked to perfection. It was a good 12oz, which was the listed size. Being a carnivore, I love 20oz hunks of meat. But, I was happy with the 12oz and so was my cardiologist. The potato pancakes were great as were the veggies. I also ordered a side of spinach, because I loves me spinach. We didn't have dessert.
I went for breakfast this morning and it was perfect out on the deck. Rated by: RogueRiverBear Rating: 07/02/2009 06:18 PMReview Text This review is done after 4 visits to this magnificent building and restaurant. It is a totally mixed bag.
Definitely 5 stars for the setting, and the physical structure. The restaurant is gorgeous outside, and the view is incredible from the patio and main floor dining room. The lower level dining room (more like a bar) is not so great.
Food is priced reasonable, and there is a vast selection of NW fare to choose from. Quality of food is ok. Nothing to write home about, but not bad, either. So I would give food a 3 star rating.
Service is the problem here. A solid one star. While the servers are friendly, they are very poorly trained about the simple things. Waiting times between courses seem to be very slow. And why is it, then can't seem to clear the dirty dishes after a course? This has happened the last two times we visited. They bring the fresh entree, and leave the appetizer dishes on the table, by just pushing them to the side!! On this last visit, I picked up my dishes and put them on her tray stand, while she watched. She smiled and took them away! Geez.
This beautiful place deserves a 4 or 5 star rating, but service really holds them back. Ashame. It is the nicest ambiance in Grants Pass. Rated by: Siouxmax Rating: 07/02/2009 05:30 PMReview Text My friends and I ate at Taprock on July 1st. The decor is awesome. The welcoming girls at the desk were efficient and friendly. Our waitress, Eva P, was wonderful. Our martinis, perfect. As for the food... I had the sirloin with cheesy mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. Cooked exactly the way I like and sooooooooo tender. The "steak butter" was great! The veggies were fresh and al-denté, the way they should be. One friend had the prime rib and raved it was perfect and another friend had the seafood pasta, that she loved. We all decided to return very soon. Rated by: Dark Blonde Rating: 06/23/2009 07:30 PMReview Text Ambience is an A. The food is a C-. For such a nice place, which it really, truly is, the food just made it a bummer. The kid meal was over cooked. The salads were gargantuan but really not that tasty or exciting. I'm not running to go back. I'd rather eat at a certain roach coach in Medford for a more satifying culinary experience. Rated by: AnEyeForTaste Rating: 06/23/2009 06:58 PMReview Text Lovely exterior and interior EXCEPT the plain tissue box in the ladies restroom is a bit tacky for such a nice place.
Hostess greeting lukewarm.
No menu substitutions allowed without a fee (ie, muffin for pancake)
Hot chocolate and latte were watery and tasted like they came from a dispenser.
Crab omelette lukewarm; luscious crab plopped into what amounted to be an egg pancake and a glob of melted cheese with absolutely NO flavor.
Pancake/hash brown/egg breakfasts mediocre.
Long delay between order and served meal (one hour) without apology or explanation and no offer of complimentary food or bevarage while our party waited.
We are local diners looking for a WOW factor and experience which would include fresh, local produce and foods, green sustainable practices (biodegradable take out boxes and utensils), composting, community involvement, menu items unique to the dining establishment, frequent menu changes -- to mention a few. This place fell short of our expectations. Rated by: Prophet Poblano Rating: 06/23/2009 05:05 PMReview Text Went back for lunch, our second visit now. It was Saturday. We parked right in front of the door and we seated without delay in the big room right by the window with an incredible view of the Rogue River.
Our server was good, but not quite as good as Casey from our first visit. (I finally remembered her name. She was outstanding.)
I heard the clam chowder wasn't freshly made, but I still tried a bowl. For $4 I thought it was a fairly generous portion, perhaps a bit pricey for a bowl of soup. The flavor was slighly unique but not bad. I would rather have had something made in the restaurant, though.
Three of us shared the sweet onion rings and they were good, served with BBQ sauce, but only about enough for two, perhaps three rings each.
The crab salad "blt" was very nice. Much like a cross between crab louie and a cobb salad, and I liked the salad dressing.
My date tried the "Kenai" alaskan cod fish tacos. Apparently for being a fish taco there was no cabbage and no mayo-type sauce, which we kind of expect on a fish taco. And we couldn't really tell what made the "pacific northwest salsa" get that name. It seemed just like regular salsa.
I was full after my soup and salad, but the rest of my party wanted the "campfire" smores, which was basically ice cream with chocolate sauce, with a side of gram cracker and toasted marshmellows. The wow factor didn't live up the menu hype or the way it looked (we saw it served on the deck below). They were unwhelmed a regretted ordering it.
Still like this place very much but just not quite as much as my previous rating here. We'll be trying them again when the mood strikes. Rated by: POBA Rating: 06/21/2009 07:44 PMReview Text Now I admit that trying to go to Taprock on Father's Day wasn't the best idea. We got there and were told it would be about 15 to 20 minutes wait. We waited for 30 minutes and then asked where we were on the list and were told we were next. The next thing we see is a group of 4 who came in after us getting seated. I asked where we were on the list, again, and was told, well we could seat you but the kitchen is backed up 45 minutes. So we could be seated but our food would take at least 45 minutes. So we said no thanks and went to the Train Depot. Rated by: Prophet Poblano Rating: 06/16/2009 06:37 PMReview Text After waiting a bit for them to shake out the bugs, it was time to give this new local landmark a try. I'll admit right up front I thought the place was a bit kitschy - from everything including "Evergreen Park" to the Pacific Northwest theme to the wildlife statues that are actual size. But I was surprised when I actually visited the site - it worked, in a Disneyland sort of way. So as far as that type of stuff is concerned, I'm at least partially converted.
Two of us arrived around 7:30pm on a Friday night, hoping to avoid a wait. We were told it would be about 30 minutes, but probably quicker. No problem. We accepted the pager and planned to go check out the surrounding sights. Unfortunately it was raining hard so we opted to stay in.
We asked if there was a bar where we enjoy some drinks while we waited. Yes, we were told we could go to the bottom deck and seat ourselves, which we did. I have to admit, even with the rain, it was extremely nice down there.
Soon after apparently they decided to begin serving meals on our deck because of the rain. Menus arrived and our pager was taken away. Somehow we had just missed out on having to wait!
Since it was our first time, we tried the appetizer platter. Just about everything was excellent from the pan-fried oysters to the crispy artisan cheese wedges to the fried zucchini to the sweet onion rings. The only weak spot was the tartar sauce.
My date tried the Kenai fish and chips and was satisfied except, again, for the tartar sauce.
Feeling adventerous, I ordered a steak that actually had the audacity to be named after local bigwig Brady Adams. It's called the Brady Lumberjack Steak of all things. It is a grilled flatiron steak covered with a blue cheese sauce. I ordered medium and it was easily well-done, but I didn't mind. I still thought it was delicious. It didn't come with soup or salad, but I did get my choice of one of their side dishes and a side of vegetables. (Which turned out to be broccoli, onion and red pepper, just about my favorite.)
From the initial greeting, to a brief bit of personal attention from the general manager himself, to our server, we received just the right amount of attention, everyone was friendly and the service was excellent.
Over time this place should grow to be one of the elite places in Grants Pass to eat. We look forward to going back again soon! Rated by: POBA Rating: 06/06/2009 03:12 PMReview Text We had dinner at Taprock for the first time last night. A bit of a wait but to be expected and it was nice to walk around the new garden area. Our server was ok, but could have been a little more attentive. The first thing we noticed was how loud it is in there. We were being taken to the downstairs which was even noisier than the upstairs so we requested to be taken upstairs. Still very loud. They should put up tapestries or something. The food was ok, just ok. I had the halibut, my husband had the meat loaf and my Mom had the crab salad. I thought for $17.99 for my halibut I should have gotten a salad or soup with it but I did not. The clam chowder they serve is Ivars which is ok, but you can get it at Elmer's and the sub shop, I was surprised that the chef didn't make his own. I don't like the kind of garlic flat bread they serve, would much rather have sourdough with butter. I'm sure a lot of people like that bread, I just don't care for it. All in all it was an ok dinner but not worth the money in my opinion. We will probably go back and try something else. We had a window table both times and it was so nice to watch the activity on the river. The window tables have a padded bench seat with back on one side and two chairs on the other; it is the closet thing to a booth.
Our first visit we had dinner on Thursday. I had Pan Seared Salmon with the Parmesan & Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes and Hubby had the Oregon Trail Steak with Bacon Potato Pancakes. Each entrée is served with Farmstand Seasonal Vegetables. Next time I am going to see if they will allow a substitution of the side dish for a small salad, the dish was a little heavy for me. Hubby had no complaints; he loved the Bacon Potato Pancakes. We finished our meal with coffee and dessert we chose Burnt Cream and Peanut Butter Stack. The entrées and desserts were excellent.
We went for breakfast on Saturday and both had the Avocado Eggs Benedict with a Blueberry Muffin and coffee. You have a choice of fresh fruit or hash browns, Hubby had the hash browns and said they were good and I had the fruit which was a fresh wedge of cantaloupe and grapes. The dish was perfectly prepared.
All the staff we came in contact with on both visits was so friendly and accommodating. We will definitely go back.
Rated by: Nelson Rating: 05/25/2009 06:45 PMReview Text Went a third atime. Why so a low rating? Because of the front desk and the way it was handled.
Went for breakfast, asked for seat outside, was told 5 minutes as was told the other two times. For the record, the first time took 20 minutes, the second 15, this time 20.
After waiting for 15 minutes I went downstairs to see if there were any outside tables available. I saw four. I went back upstair and asked if there was a reason that we were told 5 minutes and now going on twenty minutes. I was told that there were only two tables avaiable and there were people in front of me but then she had to ask my name after tellling me there were people in front of me. When I gave her my name, she said oh, I was next. I told her that I just looked and there were four table open and since she said only two and I had people in front of me, that I couldn't trust her judgement and I left.
Now, I've waited for table before at different restaurants and if she had said 15 minutes I would had a choice wether I wanted to wait or not.
I think that all this vaunted training they have had should have prepared the front people to at least be honest with people.
This place has a lot going for it but it's not as good as we have been prepared to accept.
I'll try it again but extremely disappointed. Don't believe me, go, sit waiting to be seated and try to figure out why people are waiting when there is seating avaiable, especially on the entry level floor. Do not ask for a booth, they don't have one and you'll wait longer than necessary to find that out, 20 mins or so.
Service was great. Misti was our server and she was there whenever we needed her. Asked for her table the second time but even though they said yes, we were seated differently
Prices - Applebee's plus a dollar or two.
Amount of food - Just right as some know about my dislike of too much food. Careful when you order the salads, the larger one is really too much food.
Menu - adequate and nothing too far out.
Quality of food - It was ok. Certainly nothing to complain about but nothing to shout about either.
Decor - Outstanding, much to look at but one mild complaint. On the second floor there was about one table too many making it kinda of a tight fit with your neighbors
Overall B+

We were really surprised at how efficiently everything ran considering they only opened yesterday. First, the place is absolutely beautiful and tastefully done. Lodge decor isn't my favorite but this is done with class and style. All the staff, from the hosts/hostesses to the servers and, obviously, the cooks were on their A game. Our server in particular was A+ - efficient, friendly, attentive, quick and darned cute to boot! The foot - fantastic. I had the halibut fish tacos. Perfect size portion of 3 lightly and crisply battered halibut with fresh tomatoes and lettuce and black olives and a tasty sauce. Great salsa that had a nice punch. The husband had the fish and chips. Three large pieces of moist cod that was lightly and cripsly battered. Yummy fries accompanied. Cold pale ale and cool pinot gris started everything off. We even had a window table so we had the view without being in the sun. Can't wait to go back.
